DESTROYING A VILLAGE IN ORDER TO SAVE IT

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has authorized the razing of 4500 apartment units that were damaged during Hurricane Katrina, as part of a plan to build 3000 new units of subsidized housing for poor and displaced residents of New Orleans.  Some of the apartments coming down are still occupied, and many residents are asking whether it is possible to build new housing for displaced citizens before razing these buildings.  Leslie Eaton of the New York Times reports.

Six articles in two days in the Chicago Tribune, more than a dozen this week in the Wall Street Journal,  several in the New York Times and the Washington Post — you might start to think that the folks at the Food and Drug Administration take their mandate seriously.  Is the FDA working more aggressively to keep dangerous foods and medicines out of the market?  Or maybe their public affairs department has been working overtime.

Is this a great country or what?  Come on — buck up, people!  Every day there are indications that this government works and that the Republic may actually survive for a while yet.  I mean, where else but in America could you have a major investigation into the investigating arm of government?  If anyone else is doing it, I still say we do it better.
