The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been under fire from Congress for misusing its power to issue “national security letters.” The letters enable the FBI to subpoena information such as telephone and credit card bills from U.S. citizens if deemed relevant to intelligence activities.
The Washington Post’s Carrie Johnson reports that members of the both the House and Senate are proposing bills that would mandate the letters clearly pertain to investigations of foreign threats. The House bill has the additional provision of destroying current information that’s been improperly attained—potentially useful since FBI Director Robert Mueller has already admitted to having such information.
