The case of potentially millions of missing White House e-mails has illuminated the broader lack of a federal electronic recordkeeping system. House Democrats have introduced legislation that would get the National Archives and Records Administration to set a standard for capturing and preserving e-mails across the federal government. The Washington Post’s William Branigan reports that agencies would have four year to get their act together.

Problem solved? Not according to the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. The watchdog group called the legislation “anemic” and produced a report called “Record Chaos” that chronicles archiving lowlights throughout the bureaucracy. CREW has preserved the report on their Web site. You can read Branigin here.   MB
