There was always the fear that the military prosecution of Guantanamo Bay detainee Mohammed Al-Qahtani would be a show trial. But now the Pentagon has announced there will be no trial at all for Qahtani, who the Bush administration branded the “20th hijacker” for his alleged close connections with 9/11. As the Wall Street Journal’s  Jess Bravin reports, military interrogators essentially tortured Qahtani in 2002 and that may have compromised the statements he made.

Following the dismissed case, Qahtani is a free man. No, wait — he’s still in Guantanamo as the Pentagon rethinks how to prosecute him.  Read Bravin here.  MB
