There was always the fear that the military prosecution of Guantanamo Bay detainee Mohammed Al-Qahtani would be a show trial. But now the Pentagon has announced there will be no trial at all for Qahtani, who the Bush administration branded the “20^th hijacker” for his alleged close connections with 9/11. As the Wall Street Journal’s  Jess Bravin reports, military interrogators essentially tortured Qahtani in 2002 and that may have compromised the statements he made.

Following the dismissed case, Qahtani is a free man. No, wait — he’s still in Guantanamo as the Pentagon rethinks how to prosecute him.  Read Bravin here.  MB
