The Washington Post’s Spencer S. Hsu reports that Congress is after Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Julie Meyers, secretary of DHS’s Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, for appalling medical conditions at immigration detention centers. Today, Chertoff and Meyers will meet with Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nv.) to discuss both detainee deaths due to negligence and the improper detention of U.S. citizens. In a couple of weeks, Chertoff and Meyers will appear before John Conyers’ (D-Mi.) House Judiciary Committee.

The oversight is because of in-depth investigations conducted by the Post, the New York Times and 60 Minutes.  It will be interesting to see if investigative journalism can turn around a gruesome immigration system.   Read Hsu here.  MB
