The New York Times’ Sheryl Gay Stolberg has a terrific profile of Margaret Spellings, the Dept of Education secretary for President Bush’s second term. Spellings has been going across the country preaching the merits of NCLB, a testing-based, national educational program that long ago lost bipartisan support and became a national punch line.
There’s a postmortem feel to Spellings’ travels as NCLB re-authorization legislation died in Congress last year. Now a program hugely unpopular with state legislatures and teachers unions faces either an Obama administration that will axe it or a McCain presidency that—like the President since 9/11—appears indifferent toward national education policy. -MB
