I got an e-mail from a friend about a problem in Atlanta — seems the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lost power and their backup generator didn’t work. It happened to be at a lab where the CDC stores and studies highly dangerous viruses such as the H5N1 flu virus, which, if it spread among the population, as Alison Young reports in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, could cause a pandemic. But alongside the e-mail were some handy Google ads for backup generators — both diesel and gas-powered — starting at only $199. Should we pass the hat around? That may be what it takes if the CDC can’t ensure that its backups have backups. -NH
