That’s the logic used by the Attorney General, the top legal official in the land, for why former Justice Dept. officials won’t be investigated for illegally considering political affiliation in hiring career civil servants. Michael Mukasey also said yesterday that he won’t fire civil service employees who were illegally hired due to their perceived loyalty to George Bush and the Republican Party.
The Washington Post’s Carrie Johnson graciously puts in the lead, however, that Mukasey does invite prospective civil servants who were passed over due to political considerations to re-apply. Maybe if Mukasey sends them written invitations the whole scandal will blow over.-MB
