If you get bad marks, you’re supposed to think about how to do better next time, right? That’s the gist of criticisms of the Transportation Security Administration coming out of Congress, as veteran TSA-tracker Thomas Frank reports in USA Today. After the Government Accountability Office ran more than 20,000 secret checks of airport screeners across the U.S., they found that screeners let an alarming number of people through with fake liquid explosives and detonators. TSA’s own tests found that "screeners in Los Angeles and Chicago airports missed fake bombs on agents in more than 60% of tests in 2006." Now the GAO says TSA is not doing enough to fix the problems, and the House Homeland Security Committee wants to know why. Given the immense investment the nation has made in airport security since 9/11, TSA needs to demonstrate not just better numbers, but an ongoing plan for quality improvement. -NH
