The Washington Post’s Juliet Eilperin says that Chase Hutto, Dick Cheney’s leading environmental and energy adviser, could soon become a top official at the Energy Dept. The possible news, though, is more of an opportunity for Eilperin to explore Hutto’s central role in a bunch of anti-environmental Bush environmental policies.
Hutto has pushed against regulating greenhouse gases. He scaled back a rule protecting the North Atlantic Whale. He argued that the government wasn’t responding quickly enough to petitions from oil companies. Nobody would go on record saying he’s clubbed baby seals.
With only a few months left in the administration, it’s hard to believe that Hutto’s promotion will make much of a difference. Still, it would be an in your face move by the Bush administration to its countless environmental policy critics.-MB
