So says President Bush about the federal response to Hurricane Gustav, the category 2 hurricane that hit central Louisiana yesterday. There is coverage everywhere today about the not-as-bad-as-expected hurricane that, unlike Hurricane Katrina three years ago, did not break the federally-constructed levees that protect the city.
The Washington Post’s Spencer S. Hsu has an early take on government’s emergency relief efforts — everyone is praising everyone else. George W. Bush and John McCain had especially sweet things to say about the governors of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississipppi (each a Republican).
FEMA did evacuate 7,000 people from New Orleans. But the true test may be their ability to provide emergency housing, especially following the "toxic trailers" scandal that marred post-Katrina reconstruction.-MB
