The Washington Post’s Derek Kravitz reports on a brewing bureaucratic battle that influences two major Bush administration scandals: investigators at the Interior Dept. are halting their probe of mega-lobbyist Jack Abramoff in protest of the Justice Dept. sitting on its hands regarding the so-called sex, drugs and oil scandal. Last week, Interior Inspector General Earl Devaney blew the lid open on a culture of corruption at the Minerals Management Service, the agency that receives royalties from companies that drill for oil on federal land.

The IG specifically singled out two former top employees, Gregory Smith and Lucy Dennett, for rigging contracts. Two people Dennett rigged contracts for have already plead guilty to felony corruption charges. Yet the Justice Dept. is, without explanation, not probing Smith and Dennett. Maybe the bold move by Interior investigators will force Justice to take action. Or maybe it will just help Jack Abramoff.-MB

Jack Abramoff may not be the mega-monster he was made out to be. In Gary Chafetz book “The Perfect Villian” he writes extensively about McCain withheld key emails that would have greatly altered the outcome of the trail.
