The Washington Post’s Carrie Johnson and Carol Leoning report that now-taxpayer owned AIG was being investigated by the FBI as early as March to see if it was deliberately giving the wrong value for its mortgage-related investments. Yesterday the FBI announced it was doing a broad probe into the misadventures of AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and Lehman Brothers.

AIG has given deceptive information before, under former chief executives. Indeed one of Eliot Spitzer’s great stings as New York atty. general was finding that AIG was making phony transactions to companies that were actually part of AIG. Spitzer surely has the time, if not the inclination, to help with this latest FBI probe.-MB
