The Washington Post’s Juliet Eilperin reports that the Bush administration is torn about whether to environmentally protect two underwater ecosystems near the Northern Marianas Islands. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush ,support protection of this land from fishing. Dick Cheney opposes it, claiming economic drawbacks.
Eilperin has an interesting take away about the showdown: "While environmental groups have pilloried Bush over his approaches to climate change, forest management and air pollution, many marine experts give him credit for his ocean policies." I wonder why that is. Are fewer business lobbyists meeting with the White House and Office of Mangt. and Budget who have ocean concerns? Is this a pet issue of Laura Bush? Whatever the case, the White House is perhaps uncharacteristically going through the full review process on this regulation.-MB
