61 WAYS TO RUN A BAD GOVERNMENT

The Washington Post’s Juliet Eilperin and Jeffrey Smith reported yesterday on 61 new regulations the Bush administration passed in November that will have an expected economic impact of $1.9 billion each year. These regulations run the "Can you believe they’re really evil enough to do this?" gamut: less protection for endangered species, more pollution near national parks. One makes truck drivers stay on the road for up to 11 hours if their employer desires. These rules will be hard to reverse, though the vacationing Democratic Congress says they will try on returning.

One aspect of these midnight regulations is what’s not being regulated: one shot-down rule would have required pollution controls in trucks. Another would make the government buy more energy-efficient lights. The fact that legit, pro-environment rules are being turned away bolsters the case that Bush is deliberately doing all he can to pay back business allies at the expense of public health and safety.  What a predictable, terrible president.-MB
