Matt, thanks for your comment. Jane Johnston's article cites a Dept. of Energy study that describes the toxicity of the chemicals usually used for fracking, and it also points out the availabiliy of non-toxic chemicals for the process. You got any studies to back up your claim that there is "little incidence of environmental trouble?" And if the head of the NY DEC says it's safe -- how about a link?

This sort of alarmism is absurd. I have read a great deal about hydro fracing and found there to be little incidence of environmental trouble. People like the author of this article love to scare everyone. No coal, no nukes, no oil. Natural gas is clean, abundant, redilly available. It's an excellent fuel source and we own it...lots of it. Thousand of wells are drilled every year without incident. NY's water supply is NOT in danger from this drilling, even the head of the DEC says so. It's misleading to suggest that it is. This is all we need during tough times for the economy and for energy. Go ahead and keep scaring everyone....while you're at it figure out how to power a car on good intentions.
