Cornelia Dean of the New York Times reports that they are 800 species of bird in the U.S. — and 1/3 are endangered. And the problem will get worse with global warming, according to a report mainly culled from data at the Interior Dept.

But the report also shows something else: that wetlands conservation rules enacted by Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service have made a difference in preserving the population of herons, egrets, and ducks. As John Hoskins of the United State North American Bird Conservation Initiative (a group with an unapologetically pro-bird agenda) puts it: "When agencies, organizations and individual citizens work together to conserve precious resources, some really good things happen.”

The article also contains important information for readers with pet cats: for the sake of birds, don’t let your cat out of the house.-MB
