Stimulus Spending Beneficial To States That Don’t Like Stimulus Spending

The New York Times’ Michael Cooper and Ron Nixon look at data released by the federal government yesterday that shows stimulus bill-funded contracts from federal agencies have created 30,000 jobs. However, these jobs are contracts for pre-existing programs like Dept. of Energy nuclear waste clean-up, so they aren’t responsive to what parts of the country need stimulus the most. Colorado has the most stimulus jobs through federal agency contracts, even though it has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation.  Also, the data bolsters the trend that rural, politically conservative mountain west states are the states that benefit most from federal spending — spending they usually oppose.
