In addition to the Prize for Preventive Journalism (please click here for more information), which we awarded in 2008, Understanding Government is always looking for interesting article ideas from journalists. We usually can’t pay all that much, but we have paid for individual articles in the past and for longer reports — which you can see here — with the support of foundations. Reports published thus far have covered:

  • Food and Drug Administration
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation
  • Central Intelligence Agency
  • Forest Service
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission
  • Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority

Our ultimate goal is better government — government that is better because it receives more informed criticism.  If you have an idea for a report or feature-length article you believe merits funding, send us a note at info (at) understandinggov.org. Please include a letter describing your experience, what government agency you would like to cover, and what is unique about your approach. You can also send print materials and clips to:
